A backyard pool can provide a relaxing oasis to your home. However, keeping your family safe around the pool can cause some stress. Here are our tips to keeping your backyard pool safe all summer long!
Tip #1 – Teach Your Children How To Swim
If you have a backyard pool, it is very important your family knows how to swim. Our local YMCA offers group swim classes and there are many private classes that hold sessions throughout the summer. Click here to learn more about the YMCA swim classes.
Tip #2 – Never Leave Children Unattended While Swimming
Even if your children know how to swim, accidents can happen. That is why it is important to never leave children unattended while in the pool. Designate an official Water Watcher, an adult tasked with supervising children in the water. That should be their only task – they shouldn’t be reading, texting or playing games on their phone.
Tip #3 – Install Proper Barriers Around The Pool
Proper fences, barriers, alarms and covers can be lifesaving devices. Make sure to teach younger children to never try to climb over the gate. You can also install a door alarm from the house to the pool area for one more level of protection.
Tip #4 – Create An Emergency Plan
Create an emergency plan and practice it. Do you have a throwable device? Do you have a phone nearby? Don’t forget that during an actual emergency, someone needs to call 911. It is also recommended that you learn CPR. Learning CPR can help save a life. CPR classes are available through many hospitals, community programs, or you can contact the American Red Cross.
Tip #5 – Teach Children To Stay Away From Drains
Do not play or swim near drains or suction outlets, especially in spas and shallow pools, and never enter a pool or spa that has a loose, broken or missing drain cover. Children’s hair, limbs, jewelry or bathing suits can get stuck in a drain or suction opening. When using a spa, be sure to locate the emergency vacuum shutoff before getting in the water.
